Käsisiteiden käyttö nyrkkeilyhanskojen alla – miten ja miksi?

When hitting hard, boxing gloves alone are not always enough to protect the hands. The purpose of the wristbands is to support the wrists, fingers and knuckles when punching, and to protect the bones and joints of the hand from vibration caused by punches.

We often make the mistake of thinking that armbands are meant to cushion the knuckles - that's what boxing gloves do. The hand bandage keeps the bones and joints of the hand in a tight package, so that the shock is better distributed over the entire area of the hand. This way the fingers can't press into the palms, the knuckles can't move out of place, or the thumb can't twist to the side. In addition to protection, Handcuffs make the boxing gloves fit better on the hands. Armbands should always be used when training boxing, freestyle or other martial arts, but especially when using the hardest punches. Some people like to use wristbands also in individual training, e.g. in shadow boxing, because it brings posture to the hand position and helps to imitate the correct punching technique.

Wristbands are usually about 4–5 cm wide, the length can vary from three to five meters. The suitable length depends on e.g. the size of your hands and your own preferences. The best way to find the right length is to experiment. Long bandages can be wrapped to protect the hands from a larger area. Some of the ties have Velcro fastening and a thumb loop to make tying easier.

Alternatively, different types can be used instead of hand ties under/inner gloves . The inner gloves work well, for example, during shorter training sessions, when there is hardly any time to wrap bandages. Some boxers use inner gloves in addition to the armbands, but this also depends on the size of your boxing gloves.

Flexible or non-elastic wristbands?

Hand ties are most commonly made of cotton, which may be mixed with other materials, such as nylon, to bring flexibility. Flexible bandages fit the hand a little tighter and bring the bones and tendons of the hand closer together. You may also sometimes come across elastic ties under the name "Mexican hand ties". With flexible bandages, you have to be careful not to tighten them too tight, which will prevent the blood from circulating properly in the hands. With non-elastic bandages, this problem does not exist. Non-elastic bandages are often (but not always) made of a slightly thicker material.

Professional boxers more often use elastic bandages, and non-elastic ones are more popular among beginners. However, this is entirely a matter of taste, i.e. both offer excellent protection for the hands. Even in competitions, both are accepted.

Maintenance

Despite good ventilation, hands always sweat during boxing training. That's why it's a good idea to wash Hand Ties after each use. This also helps to keep the boxing gloves fresh for a long time. For active trainers, we recommend getting a few pairs, so you have plenty of time to maintain the Hand Bands between uses. Most Hand Ties can be washed with normal laundry, with a mild detergent. However, always follow the washing instructions that come with the bandages.

Note! Allow the bandages to dry properly before use, this will extend the life of both them and the gloves. Using wet armbands quickly causes bacteria to spread inside the boxing gloves.

How to tie wristbands?

There are several different methods for wrapping hand ties. The main thing is that the bandage protects 4 areas: the wrist, the knuckles, the thumb and between the fingers. Once again, practice makes perfect! The video below shows one easy way to wrap hand ties, from which you can take some tips.
