Tennis is a fun and challenging ball game that develops oxygen uptake, explosiveness, coordination and accuracy. Almost anyone can start the sport, you don't need any special skills. Playing improves your fitness and game reading skills every time. As equipment, you only need a racket, a ball and good shoes for the tennis court. Tennis rackets are available with many different features, but a beginner should pay attention to at least the racket's weight, circumference size, balance and handle size.
Weight
The weight of the tennis racket is stated without strings. The weight usually varies between about 250 and 350 g. The lighter the racket is, the easier it is to move, and a light racket is therefore great for beginners. Heavier rackets are mainly used by professionals, because they give more power to hits, but at the same time, the difficulty of controlling the racket also increases.
The weight of the racket is largely determined by the materials used in it. Today, the bodies of tennis rackets are made of either aluminum, fiberglass or carbon fiber, and the net is made of synthetic material.
Circumference size
Club size is given in square inches and is often marked with just a number. The ring size range is generally 95–110. For beginners and juniors, a racket with a larger circumference is often chosen, because it is naturally easier to hit the ball with this. In addition to the rim size, the profile of the racket, i.e. the width, can also vary. A wide racket has a wider "sweetspot", i.e. the ideal hitting point. A wider club produces more power in the shots, so the ball leaves the club with a bang, even if the hitting technique is not yet fully refined. As accuracy develops, players choose a smaller and narrower rim size, which improves the feel of the ball.
The inch size of the children's racket is chosen according to the child's height. The racket usually comes with a detailed size chart, you can find the general size chart at the end of the text.
Voltage density
String density, or the density of the string network, means the number of strings in the racket. The most common chord densities are 16x19 and 18x20. In these, the first number means the number of vertical chords, the latter the number of horizontal chords. A densely tensioned racket offers better control of the ball, as the string battery does not move much when the ball hits it. Less string density enables the string battery to have a little more flexibility at the moment of impact, which brings more twist, softness and power to the stroke.
Balance
When talking about the balance of a tennis racket, it means whether the racket is more handle- or tip-oriented. The balance is indicated in centimeters from the base of the handle, for example 33 cm. The lower the number, the more grip-weighted the club is. The grip-weighted racket is the choice of professionals and advanced players. In these clubs, the feel to the ball is the best, but the forgiveness and power output are weaker. When using a racket with handle weights, you need more power in your hitting technique. In a handle-weighted racket, the stroke must also hit the sweet spot more precisely, i.e. the hitting area.
A tip-weighted club is more forgiving of technique mistakes and offers a little extra power to the shot because the tip has more weight behind the ball. A tip-weighted racket is a good choice for a beginner or someone who has played less.
Handle
The tennis racket is held with a hand grip. The handle size is correct when the fingertips do not quite touch the base of the thumb. On the other hand, a handle that is too large does not stay firmly in the hand, you have to squeeze it with your fingers. The handle size is indicated on a scale of 0–5. Size 1 is generally used by Juniors, size 2 is suitable for the majority of women, size 3 for the majority of men and size 4 for players with large hands.
Price
The price of the racket is affected by the brand, the materials used and other features. Good hobby-level tennis rackets can be found for a few tens of euros, competition-level rackets can cost hundreds of euros.
