The history of aromatic oils
Aromatic oils have been part of human culture for thousands of years, beginning with ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China, and Rome, where they were valued for their medicinal, cosmetic, and spiritual properties. Historically, aromatic oils have been used, among other things, as grave decorations, in rituals and as healing substances for various ailments.
The manufacturing methods of fragrance oils
Aromatic oils can be divided into two main types: natural essential oils and synthetic fragrance oils. Natural essential oils are extracted directly from plants through steam distillation, cold pressing or resin extraction. These methods are used to gently extract the aromatic compounds from the plants so that the oil retains as much of the plant's original chemical properties and aromas as possible. Essential oils are concentrates, and they contain the "soul" of the plant, i.e. the strong essence and scent. Synthetic fragrance oils are chemically produced to mimic natural scents.
Uses and popular oils:
Essential oils are used in many ways today, such as in aromatherapy, in cosmetic products, in natural cleaning products, and to support meditation. Some of the most popular essential oils include:
- Lavender: known for its calming properties, helps relieve stress and promotes sleep.
- Eucalyptus: used to help the respiratory system, as it helps clean the air and relieve respiratory problems.
- Tea tree: prized for its antimicrobial properties, tea tree oil is effective in treating acne and other skin infections.
- Peppermint: a refreshing and pain-relieving oil that also helps with indigestion.
Aromatherapy tools:
As aromatherapy has become more popular, various tools have been developed for spreading and using essential oils. Two popular tools are:
- Scented lanterns: a traditional method where the heat from the candle heats the oil in a small cup at the top of the lantern, releasing the aromas of the oil into the air.
- Aroma diffusers: electrical devices that disperse essential oil into microscopically small particles into a room-wide mist. The diffusers are efficient, easy to use and safe, as they do not use an open flame.
The use of aromatic oils offers many benefits, such as improved mood, better sleep quality and reduced stress levels, which is why they have remained popular throughout the millennia and continue to be popular tools for promoting well-being in today's busy world. The fragrance oils are really enough, i.e. just a couple of drops are enough to release a good amount of fragrance into the room air. Avoid using fragrances if you are prone to allergies or asthma.
