Is it time to use a new yoga mat?
Even some high-quality yoga mats require several uses before their surface starts to hold properly. This is typical for PVC carpets in particular. Slipping is caused by a thin film left on the surface of the carpet during its finishing, which wears off during use. Often just a few uses help to break the film, and the carpet starts to have more grip. However, if you feel that you can't wait for the mat to wear out or the surface seems to slip too much under your hands and feet during the first exercises, you can speed up the wear of the surface by treating the mat with salt.
Salt treatment of a yoga mat is an easy and simple procedure for which you do not need special equipment, only a new yoga mat, finely divided salt (sea salt, table salt, etc.) and a damp cloth. The treatment is recommended to be done only once, when the carpet is put into use - this way you won't damage the surface of the carpet!
- Spread the mat out in the open, preferably in the bathroom, or in another easy-to-clean place. In the summer, you can also perform salt washing on, for example, the terrace.
- Spread a thin layer of salt over the carpet all over. Leave the salt on for 12-24 hours. The effect time depends on the carpets, check any instructions provided by the manufacturer. The effect can be enhanced by leaving the carpet in sunlight, but the treatment can also be done indoors.
- After the effect time has passed, moisten the rag or a clean cloth properly with water, and rub the carpet with the cloth for about 5 minutes, in circular motions. However, be careful not to use too much force. It is not recommended to use a sponge, as salt easily causes the sponge to crumble.
- After this, you can wipe or rinse off the remaining salts, and leave the carpet to dry (for example by hanging) properly before use or rolling.
Now your new yoga mat is ready to use! Maintain the grip of the mat by wiping it regularly with a cleaning agent designed for yoga mats to prevent dirt from sticking to the surface of the mat.
